Great Mexican Food ... Finally!!

As many of you know, last summer Creative Loafing came out with their list of 100 Dishes to Eat in Atlanta. The list has been a huge hit around our house because it's given us direction in exploring new food. However, some of the places are significantly out of the way and thus require a bigger planning commitment. Such is the case with La Oaxaquena Taqueria in Jonesboro. Sad to say, but the farthest south I ever seem to travel in metro Atlanta is to the airport. Even the lure of Mexican food has kept me away. However, recently a business trip took me out of town faaaar too long, and I was coming home late afternoon on a Friday. After a chat with Billy, we decided the best way to blend a bunch of objectives (see each other, avoid traffic, eat great food) was to have the family take the train to the airport and go to Jonesboro from there. I highly recommend this strategy - especially if someone in the family travels!

Public transportation is still exciting for Team Phenix. (Hey NY friends - I hear your groaning - Keep it down!)

I was thrilled to actually be MET at the airport! From Hartsfield-Jackson, the restaurant is a 15 minute drive.

One of the first clues that a Mexican food restaurant is legit, is the salsa bar. There needs to be a wide variety of salsas including some that will make you sweat. However, what reminds me of So. Cal most is when they have the pickled carrots and onions. Be still my heart!!The item on The List (Tylayuda Oaxaquena) is categorized under "snack" and should probably be shared with a group. The dish is HUGE!!

I thoroughly enjoyed the crisp shell and SUPER fresh ingredients. However, I was so stuffed I wasn't able to fully enjoy all of the wonderful offerings on the menu. I am DYING to try the chicken mole tamale. Take a look!

Fortunately, Billy ordered one of the Huaraches, so I was able to branch out a little. For an entree, his was a much better choice.I don't know how often we'll do the trek down to Jonesboro, but it's good to know that if I'm ever dying for a taste of home, there's an option 45 minutes away that's definitely worth the drive!

If any of you check it out, let me know what to order next!
